Flooded areas to get extra trash pickup

 •  Flood-prone areas scoured

The city yesterday announced it will make special refuse pickups beginning this morning in Windward O'ahu areas affected by last week's floods.

"The flooding generated many tons of debris and damaged household items and furnishings, so we are assigning extra refuse collection personnel to that area," Mayor Mufi Hannemann said.

The special pickups will take place from Kahuku to Kahalu'u. The city did not specify how long that will last.

Residents are asked to leave refuse curbside, where they normally place their refuse bins. Residents are asked to separate their waste into four categories:

  • Green waste. Place in blue automated refuse carts, and bag or bundle excess.

  • Metal items, such as water heaters, refrigerators and other appliances.

  • Hazardous waste, such as paint, household cleaners and bottled materials that carry warning labels.

  • All other refuse, including household trash. Place in gray automated refuse carts for regular trash collection. Bag or bundle excess. Roll up and tie large sections of carpet.

Residents also may haul refuse to the Kapa'a Transfer Station off Kapa'a Quarry Road in Kailua. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m to 6 p.m. on weekends.
