David McClain was appointed the permanent president of the state's 10-campus higher education system in a special University of Hawai'i Board of Regents meeting this afternoon.

McClain, who has served for nearly two years as acting and interim president, has been in negotiations with regent chairwoman Kitty Lagareta and regent Al Landon for the past week. McClain is expected to serve until 2009.

The contract calls for a $360,000 salary.

McClain, 59, previously served as vice president for academic affairs under president Evan Dobelle and as dean of the UH-Manoa College of Business. He has also worked in Washington, D.C., as senior staff economist on the Council of Economic Advisers to President Jimmy Carter.
