On March 7, 1899, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported the death of Princess Kaiulani the previous day.

1903: Hawai'i's first automatic telephones, in which subscribers could call each other without going through an operator, are given a test run.

1931: The new Kapi'olani Boulevard from Ward to Sheridan is opened to traffic.

1937: The Kodak Hula Show officially begins.

1950: The U.S. flag is raised over the sunken USS Arizona, the first time the flag had flown over the Arizona since 9 a.m. Dec. 7, 1941.

1958: Angry 'Aina Haina residents blame the city for negligence and demand protection from future flood damage. After heavy March 5 rains, water from the 'Aina Haina Stream wrecked homes and property.

1977: George Helm and Kimo Mitchell of the Protect Kahoolawe Ohana die at sea. A storm blew up while they were paddling a surfboard from Maui to Kaho'olawe to get two protesters who had been on the island for more than a month.

1978: The state attorney general's office recommends that Bishop Estate trustees be ordered to undertake sweeping reforms, including a change in the method used to compute their pay so they won't get massive commissions from land sales.
