1861: Honolulu's first opera is performed at the Royal Hawaiian Theatre.
1889: Ground is broken for the O'ahu railway. The start is made near Moanalua, the country estate of Samuel Mills Damon.
1911: The Board of Health is distributing more than 7,500 pounds of poi free every day from four stations, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports. There is a health inspector at each site. Earlier in the month, the sale of poi had been prohibited because it was believed some was contaminated with cholera.
1930: By meeting the right-of-way demands of Bishop Estate and using $60,000 from a tax increase, Kalaniana'ole Highway from Koko Head park to Makapu'u, can be completed this year, The Advertiser reports.
1947: Two wasp-like parasites are introduced to the Islands in an effort to fight the mango fruit fly, which was first discovered to be in the Islands in 1946.
1950: The Army announces that the people of Hawai'i may now visit Diamond Head crater, which had been closed to the public for 46 years.
1965: Hawai'i's ILWU pineapple workers strike for one day, idling plantations on five islands.
