Hawaii tops Western Illinois in baseball

Hawaii starter Steven Wright struck out a career-high 13 in a complete-game performance Friday as the Rainbows opened a series against Western Illinois with a 3-2 victory over the Leathernecks.

Wright (4-1) allowed six hits, one walk and two earned runs as he boosted his record to 4-1.

The Rainbows (14-6) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Justin Frash hit an RBI double and scored on a double by Luis Avila.

Western Illinois (2-10) responded with a run in the top of the second as Travis Check tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Johnson.

Hawaii scored in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Derek Dupree.

The Leathernecks ended the scoring in the seventh with Check reaching home on a single by Nick Simmons.

Western Illinois starter Wyatt Luebber (0-2) took the loss.

The teams were to play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
