2 killed in Oahu traffic accidents

O'ahu recorded its 15th and 16th traffic fatalities in separate accidents today.

A 94-year-old man crossing Mango Street in Wahiawa was struck by a 1993 Ford Explorer driven by a man, 26, that was turning into the street from California Avenue around 6:25 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead at Wahiawa General Hospital.

The accident occurred during heavy rain and darkness. The pedestrian was in the vicinity of a marked crosswalk although it was not clear if he was actually in the crosswalk.

In 'Aina Haina, a 75-year-old bicyclist was struck at Kalaniana'ole Highway near West Hind Drive by city bus driven by a 54-year-old man. around 11:42 a.m. He died at The Queen's Medical Center

Police said the bicyclist was crossing Kalaniana'ole outside of a marked crosswalk and the accident occurred under overcast skies.

Police said they did not think speed or alcohol were factors in either collision.

There were 17 traffic fatals on O'ahu at this time last year.
