The Skate Aloha 2006 Figure Skating Competition concludes today at the Ice Palace Skating Arena in the Stadium Mall across from Aloha Stadium.

Fifty-three skaters from Hawai'i and the Mainland are participating in the event, hosted by the Hawai'i Figure Skating Club.

The levels of the skaters range from beginners to senior-level skaters.

Admission to the competition is free.

"This is a local competition that we have," competition chairwoman Katharine C. Owen said. "It started 11 years ago because we wanted to get some competition in for our kids," so they did not always have to travel to the Mainland for events.

Today's competition runs from 2:30 to 6 p.m.

Former All-Americans Lisa Strand-Ma'a, Karrie (Trieschman) Poppinga and Fiona Nepo are among those who will play on the "U.S. Volleyball Legends" team that will take on the 2006 "Mama san" champions from Japan.

The exhibition is at 6:30 p.m., March 30, at Farrington High School. Admission is free.

The Ikunosky Club of Osaka is the 2006 Mama san Volleyball Federation Champion. Runner-up KVC of Tokyo will also participate.

The Hawai'i-based USA Team also includes former UH players Diana (McInerny) McKibbin and Melissa Villaroman. The Japan team will feature five former national team members.
