Hawaiian crafters give free demonstrations at downtown venue

"It's Na'au or Newa" is the title of the current exhibit, presented by the Bishop Museum, at The ARTS at Marks Garage downtown. Today Marks hosts demonstrations by three Hawaiian practitioners:

  • Brother and sister Solomon Apio and Verna Apio Takashima, on creating kapa beaters and the pounding and decorating of kapa. 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

  • Gordon 'Umi Kai, on the making of weapons from a swordfish bill. 2:30-6 p.m.

    The exhibit, featuring 16 contemporary Hawaiian artists, practitioners and poets, continues through March 25. The ARTS at Marks Garage is at 1159 Nu'uanu Ave. Admission is free.
