1905: Six California doctors say that contrary to the findings of a Honolulu coroner's jury, Mrs. Jane Stanford died of angina pectoris and was not poisoned.
1906: A fire destroys the makai end of the new roller-skating rink on Queen Street. A lit cigarette thrown to the floor is thought to be the cause.
1929: A new automated traffic signal system gets its first test in downtown Honolulu. With few exceptions, the Acme automatic traffic system installed at King and Fort and King and Bishop works without confusion. Lights and semaphores indicate stop and go.
1938: Harry Owens, composer and leader of the Royal Hawaiian dance orchestra, wins the Academy Award for best film song of 1937 for "Sweet Leilani," which was composed in honor of his 3-year-old daughter, Leilani. Bing Crosby sings the song in the movie "Waikiki Wedding."
1942: Details are released for an evacuation plan designed to provide for the orderly removal of women and children from areas makai of Honolulu's evacuation line and to provide for their billeting, medical care and food. Residents are urged to make advance arrangements, and cross-town traffic was to be reduced to a minimum in the event of an evacuation.
1959: The U.S. Senate votes 76-15 for statehood for Hawai'i.
