Advertiser Staff

The Army today identified the solder killed in an explosives accident at Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island as Staff Sgt. Oscar Rodriguez, 27, a native of Beeville, Texas.

Rodriguez was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division's 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry regiment.

He was killed Friday afternoon during a live-fire training exercise, the Army said. Four other soldiers were injured. The Hawai'i County Fire Department said all five "sustained blast trauma due to accidental munitions malfunction."

Rodriguez joined the Army in January 1996 and was assigned to Schofield Barracks in October 2002. He is survived by his wife and son.
