F.A. Schaefer & Co. advertised the merchandise it was expecting shortly from Germany in the March 12, 1870, Pacific Commercial Advertiser.

1895: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports a large number of Kamehemeha School graduates have formed an alumni association.

1905: Mass meetings are held at various churches to oppose a bill before the legislature that would loosen Sunday regulations. Under the proposal, restaurants and soda parlors would be able to open all day and hours would be extended for the sale of some foods.

1918: The Honolulu board of supervisors adopts a resolution setting aside $50,000 as the first outlay for pumping artesian water to higher levels of Nu'uanu Valley to replace the use of drainage water, which had been condemned as a menace to the health of Honolulu.

1918: Queen's Hospital announces it plans to build a new main building at a cost of $300,000 and will undertake measures to decrease the amount of noise in the hospital. Patients had been complaining about the noise level.

1923: The machinery of the new Waimanalo plantation is turned on for the first time, with the first cane to be cut the next day.

1930: The Advertiser reports that heirs of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Dowsett recently offered the Dowsett home on Punahou Street to the Shriners to be used in connection with their work with children with orthopedic conditions in the territory.

1951: The University of Hawai'i withdraws its invitation to Linus Pauling, chairman of the department of chemistry at California Institute of Technology, to dedicate its new chemistry building. UH president Gregg Sinclair said the invitation was withdrawn because Pauling refused to testify under oath that he was not a Communist.

1959: The U.S. House approves statehood for Hawai'i.

1966: Hawaiian Airlines receives its first DC9, the first jet to be put into commercial interisland service.

2001: Evan Dobelle is chosen 12th president of the University of Hawai'i.
