An 18-year-old Maui man fatally shot a friend in the chest while loading a rifle outside of his Koali home on Saturday, police said.

The victim, a 20-year-old Hana man, died before arriving at the Hana Community Medical Center, Maui police said.

The 18-year-old told police he was loading the rifle while standing outside a pickup truck when the rifle went off, hitting his friend, who was sitting in the front passenger seat.

Hana patrol officers responded to the shooting scene. Police detectives from the Wailuku Criminal Investigation Division took the rifle.

Police said an autopsy will be conducted. There was no immediate sign of foul play. Police yesterday continued their investigation.
