Voluntary evacuations in Koloa, Kalaheo and Waimea

Advertiser Staff

Voluntary flooding evacuations are being conducted in three communities as severe rain continues to drive across the southern and western parts of the island.

Waikomo Stream is over its banks in Koloa, prompting the evacuation of a number of areas in that region.

In Kalaheo, Alexander & Baldwin's Elua Reservoir was full and the company urged nearby residents to evacuate.

There was also a voluntary evacuation in Waimea. Resident Margaret Ezekiel said several roads and low-lying areas were flooded in Waimea Valley.

Civil Defense officials suggested people voluntarily evacuate if their individual situations were of concern. Problem areas around Koloa included Aloha Place, Kapau, Knudsen, Mission, Waila'au and Wailani roads.

National Guard troops were standing by at Koloa and Waila'au Roads to help get residents to higher ground.

The National Weather Service extended its flash flood warning for the island through 5 p.m.
