Governor to ask for emergency funds for recovery

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle will ask state lawmakers tomorrow for emergency money to fund weather-related recovery efforts from the past three weeks of rain, a news release said.

The money will pay for overtime expenses, fund additional positions and pay for consultants for state agencies involved in the various clean-up and recovery efforts.

Among the expenses she wants to fund are those related to the attorney general's hiring of dam experts to conduct an investigation into the failure of the Kaloko Reservoir dam on Tuesday.

Lingle also will seek money to hire consultants who can determine the structural integrity of dams and reservoirs across the state, assess potential immediate risks and recommend long-term plans for dam safety.
