Rainbows' Huang third in NCAA 1-meter diving

University of Hawai'i diver QiongJie Huang finished in third place last night in the final of the 1-meter springboard diving event at the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championship at the University of Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.
Huang, who was fourth after the preliminaries, finished with 324.05 points.
USC's Blythe Hartley won the title with 353.50 points, followed by South Carolina's Allison Brennan (326.10).
UH divers Rui Wang and Megan Farrow, failed to make the finals and finished 15th and 27th, respectively
Huang won the 1-meter NCAA Championship last season, becoming UH's first-ever national diving champion.
Hawai'i's Nicole Mackey finished the preliminaries in the 200-yard individual medley in 21st place with a time of 2:01.30, missing the B-Final by one-half of a second and the A-Final by two seconds.
The meets continues today with all three divers in the 3-meter springboard event. Mackey will compete in the 100-meter backstroke.

RAIN WASHES OUT HAWAI'I-HILO TWINBILL
The scheduled doubleheader between the University of Hawai'i-Hilo and Western Illinois at Wong Stadium in Hilo was canceled because of unplayable field conditions because of the rain.
The series between the teams will be moved to Simmons' Field in Kailua, Kona for doubleheaders today and tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. both days.

UH'S WICHMANN 2ND IN HEPTATHLON, TRIALS BY 51
University of Hawai'i sophomore Annett Wichmann is in second place in the heptathlon after the first four events at the Northridge Open Multi-Events Meet yesterday at the Matador Track and Field Complex at Northridge, Calif.
Wichmann, from Jena, Germany, set UH records in winning the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches) and the shot put (43 feet, 3 1/2 inches). She finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.68 seconds) and ninth in the 200 meters (27.02 seconds) for 3,034 points to trail Sacramento State's Roshena Duree by 51 points heading into today's final events.
Rainbow Wahine sophomore Mallory Gilbert is ninth with 2,521 points. She was third in the high jump (5-3 3/4), seventh in the shot put (33-4 1/2), 11th in the 100-meter hurdles (16.32) and 18th in the 200 meters (29.13).
GOLF
ALOHA SECTION'S FIRST MAJOR TEES OFF SUNDAY
The first major of the 2006 Aloha Section PGA season begins Sunday when the Big Island Candies Scotch 4-Ball Championship tees off at 11:30 a.m. at The Club at Hokuli'a. The 36-hole team event concludes Monday on the Big Island.
Ko'olau Golf Club's John Lynch and Pearl Country Club's Beau Yokomoto won their second straight title last year. They fired a final-round 70 in the alternate-shot format for a two-day total of 3-under-par 141.
Lynch is playing with Kapalua's David Rau this year, opening the way for a new winner among the 21 teams competing. Other teams include Kevin Hayashi and Lance Taketa, Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield, and Kirk Nelson and Jerry King.
Total purse is $12,000, with $3,500 going to the winning team. Points for Governor's Cup selection and Section Player of the Year will also be available.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
HPU, NORTH GEORGIA SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER
Courtney Kessell pitched a three-hitter and Krystal Plunkett doubled home a run in the third inning as Hawai'i Pacific edged North Georgia College, 1-0, to gain a split of a doubleheader at Kailua High field.
In the first game, Krista Bess and Brittany Barnes each drove in three runs, and Lara Seamon's two-run triple in the top of the eighth inning lifted North Georgia College to an 11-9 victory.
Kessel (6-2) struck out nine and did not walk a batter over seven innings in pitching her fourth shutout of the season.
The Sea Warriors are 13-5. North Georgia College is 8-6.
