UH diver second at nationals

University of Hawai'i diver Rui Wang took second place in platform diving at the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving National Championship yesterday at the University of Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.

UH finished 15th in team scoring with 90 points, its highest total ever. Auburn won the title with 518.5 points. The showing was the second best finish in Hawaii's program's history, as the 1983 squad placed 13th.

Wang, a senior, scored 320.00 points in the platform diving finals, edged by Kentucky's Taryn Ignacio, with 335.30 points.

Teammate QiongJie Huang placed 13th with 238.10 points.

Two UH swimmers also competed yesterday. Nicole Mackey posted a time of 1:58.31 in the 200-yard backstroke, picking up two points for a 15th place finish in the finals. Mia Broden did not qualify for the finals in the 200-yard butterfly. The junior finished in 36th place with a time of 2:02.18.
