The history of today
MARCH 18 |
||
|
1895: Martial law is lifted. It had been in effect since the first day of the royalist rebellion.
1911: Pearl Harbor's defense guns are test-fired.
1920: Kilauea erupts and an overflow of lava from the Halema'uma'u crater destroys all trails to the pit.
1937: Amelia Earhart flies from Alameda, Calif., to Honolulu on the first leg of an around-the-world trip. The flight took 15 hours and 54 minutes.
1941: Twenty-six defendants in a federal espionage case in Honolulu plead guilty to fraudulent registration of fishing sampans.
1959: President Eisenhower signs legislation admitting Hawai'i as the 50th state. The Territorial Senate votes to adopt "Aloha State" as Hawai'i's official nickname.
1982: The state orders all whole milk off O'ahu grocery shelves because it contained the pesticide heptachlor. O'ahu residents were also urged to dispose of all milk they had in their homes. The pesticide got into dairy cattle that were fed green chop, which contained pineapple leaves. The heptachlor was sprayed on pineapple fields.
2000: The Waimea Bay bypass road opens, reconnecting the North Shore, which had been cut in two since a March 6 rockslide closed a portion of Kamehameha Highway.
