Water rising in damaged Kaua'i dams

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua'i--Heavy rains overnight began rising water levels in the Kaloko and Morita reservoirs this morning, as civil defense officials monitored the situation and considered responses.

Although severely damaged, both dams continue to hold some water, and a Civil Defense spokeswoman said new inflows last night were overcoming the continual pumping and diversions.

Other parts of the island also flooded in overnight rains. Among reported problem areas were Kuhio Highway fronting Princeville Airport, the Koke'e Road from Kekaha to Waimea Canyon Drive and parts of Kapa'a.
