Electricity out in parts of O'ahu, traffic redirected

By Eloise Aguiar

Lightning and flooding are leaving people without electricity in 'Ewa and Kailua and causing police to turn back traffic in Windward O'ahu.

Lightning struck transformers on Ulupi'i Street in the Kailua Olomana subdivision and in 'Ewa, affecting about 50 households, according to Janet Crawford, Hawaiian Electric Co. spokeswoman. Residents could be without electricity for the better part of the afternoon, Crawford said.

"The unfortunate thing for these customers is there are no other lines feeding their homes so we can't isolate the problem and reroute power to them," Crawford said. "There's so other way in."

Crawford said the lightning damaged other nearby transformers at the two locations and they, too, will have to be repaired or replaced.

A HECO crew has also been dispatched to Marconi Road near Turtle Bay to fix a leaning pole, Crawford said. Another leaning pole was reported in Hau'ula but that pole is not impacting traffic or customers, she said.

Police are turning back motorists in Windward O'ahu at Wailehua Road and Hygienic Store in Kahalu'u, Waikane Bridge and Marconi Road near Turtle Bay due to high water on the road, police said. Kapa'a Quarry Road in Kailua is flooding.

People should stay off the roads, police said.
