The history of today

MARCH 19

In 1919, the Honolulu board of supervisors took the first steps toward building what is today McKinley High School.

1904: The Honolulu Aquarium is formally opened. It is the third-oldest aquarium in the United States and was made possible by the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. C.M Cooke and James Castle and the Honolulu Rapid Transit and Land Co.

1906: The tract of land owned by Henry E. Cooper in Manoa Valley adjoining College Hills is to be syndicated and opened up to homebuilders. There are 50 building lots in the tract, nearly all of them commanding a fine view, some both of sea and mountains.

1920: Col. Samuel Parker, foreign minister under Queen Lili'uokalani, dies at the age of 66.

1947: Maui bus drivers call off their five-day strike against the Kahului Railroad Co. because the union was told it had not filed required notice of intent to strike. The drivers walked off over schedules and pay.

1957: The Kimball famlly, owners of the Halekulani Hotel, turn down Roy Kelley's offer of $4 million for the famed resort and its choice beachfront property. They said the offer was too small.

1964: Dr. Nils Larsen, a pioneer in Hawai'i's medical history, dies at the age of 73. He led the fight for improvement of Hawai'i's milk supply and developed a medical and health education program for plantation workers.

1975: News accounts reveal that Howard Hughes' Glomar Explorer, which had been in Hawai'i waters in August and Septermber 1974, had recovered part of a sunken Soviet submarine.

1978: Flames engulf a 22,000-barrel diesel tank at the Chevron USA compound on Nimitz Highway and only the joint efforts of city, Air Force and Navy firefighters prevent the inferno from setting off a devastating explosion.

1998: Liberty House, Hawai'i's oldest and largest department store, files for bankruptcy.
