UH diver second at NCAAs

University of Hawai'i diver Rui Wang took second place in platform diving at the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving National Championship yesterday at the University of Georgia's Gabrielsen Natatorium.

UH finished 15th with 90 points, its highest ever. Auburn won the title with 518.5 points.

Wang, a senior, scored 320.00 points in the platform diving finals, edged by Kentucky's Taryn Ignacio, with 335.30.

Teammate QiongJie Huang placed 13th with 238.10 points.

UH swimmer Nicole Mackey posted a time of 1:58.31 in the 200-yard backstroke, picking up two points for a 15th-place finish in the finals. Mia Broden did not reach the finals in the 200-yard butterfly. The junior finished 36th in 2:02.18.


TENNIS

UH UPSETS ARIZONA ST.

The unranked Hawai'i men upset their second ranked team in three days, taking down No. 40 Arizona State yesterday, 4-3, at the UH tennis complex. The Rainbows upset No. 70 Purdue Thursday. Collegiate tennis rankings go 75 deep.

Hawai'i (5-4) won the lone doubles point with victories in two of the three pro-set matches. Freshman Sascha Heinemann then won again, at No. 1 singles. The Sun Devils tied the match at 2 with victories at Nos. 2 and 6.

The final three matches went three sets, with Ryan Sceats rallying in the third singles and Chad Faulk clinching the upset with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

The Rainbow Wahine lost to 54th-ranked Texas Tech, 6-1.


TRACK AND FIELD

UH DOES WELL AT RELAYS

The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team won three events at the Northridge Relays yesterday at the Matador Track and Field Complex in Northridge, Calif.

UH's relay teams won the 4x800 in 9 minutes, 30.47 seconds, the 1,600 sprint medley in 4:12.49 and 4x100 shuttle hurdle in 69.16.

Also, Hawai'i sophomore Emily Sheppard placed second in the high jump (5 feet, 7 inches), while teammate Mallory Gilbert finished fourth (5-3).

Michel Wilson was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:00.22). Junior Patricia Gauthier took third in the pole vault (11-11.75).


SOFTBALL

KANSAS BEATS HAWAI'I

Kassie Humphreys tossed a two-hitter, and Serena Settlemier belted a solo home run as Kansas (15-13) beat Hawai'i, 3-1, in the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday.

The tournament continues today. Hawai'i (14-12) plays Northwestern (13-6) at 2 p.m.

HPU WINS TWO

Hawai'i Pacific University swept a doubleheader from Vanguard University (Costa Mesa, Calif.), 4-2 and 3-0, yesterday at Kailua High School.

Kellie Nishikida went 3 for 3 and scored twice for the Sea Warriors in the first game. Dayna Berry and Courtney Kessell combined to pitch a five-hit shutout in the second.

USC WINS EXHIBITION

No. 1 USC beat No. 5 Hawai'i, 19-15, in an exhibition match yesterday at UH's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatics Complex.

Kelly Mason scored five goals and Iefke Van Belkum scored four for Hawai'i.
