Gabbard to run for state Senate

Advertiser Staff

Former Honolulu City Councilman Mike Gabbard announced this morning that he would be a candidate for the Republican primary in state Senate District 19, which covers Kapolei, Makakilo and Waikele.

The seat is now held by Sen. Brian Kanno, a Democrat and chairman of the Senate Labor Committee.

Gabbard had considered running for U.S. Congress for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Ed Case, D-Hawai'i, but said he chose a state Senate run after speaking with his family and supporters.

Gabbard lost a congressional campaign to Case in 2004.
