BUSINESS BRIEFS
Time Inc. to refund 1,030 residents

Advertiser Staff

About 1,030 Hawai'i residents are due refunds from Time Inc. after the publisher agreed to settle allegations that it billed or charged people for unwanted magazine subscriptions.

Time also agreed to pay $75,000 toward attorney's fees and a fund for consumer education, the Hawai'i Office of Consumer Protection said. Hawai'i joined with 22 other states in obtaining an $8.8 million settlement from Time.

The publisher allegedly changed its policy on some subscriptions to automatically renew them without adequately informing people, the consumer advocate's office said. It also sent magazine solicitations that looked like bills, but didn't contain conspicuous disclosures.

Aloha Airlines to replace six jets

Aloha Airlines, which emerged from bankruptcy protection about a month ago, is replacing nearly a third of its aircraft fleet.

The state's second largest airline said it will replace six of its Boeing 737-200 jets used on its interisland passenger and cargo service. The new aircraft replace older planes whose leases are expiring.

Aloha, whose fleet includes 21 Boeing aircraft for its interisland and Mainland Service, emerged from bankruptcy protection last month under new ownership led by California billionaire Ron Burkle's Yucaipa Companies.
