On March 21, 1917, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported the wreck of the steamer Maui.

1902: The mercantile and shipping firm H. Hackfeld & Co. Ltd. opens its new three-story building on a main thoroughfare of Honolulu, Fort Street.

1909: Nigel Jackson wins the first Hawaiian Marathon, crossing the finish line at Hale'iwa at 12:25 p.m. He had covered the 29-mile course in four hours, 51 1/2 minutes.

1927: The new John Rodgers Airport is dedicated.

1961: Thurston Twigg-Smith is appointed the seventh publisher in The Advertiser's history. In a reorganization of the company, Lorrin P. Thurston announced his retirement effective at the end of the year.

1965: Martin Luther King Jr. leads some 5,000 civil rights demonstrators on the first leg of the Freedom March in Alabama, from Selma to Montgomery. King and other marchers wore lei taken to the march by a Hawai'i delegation.

1977: Mayor Frank Fasi is indicted by an O'ahu grand jury on a bribery charge in connection with the Kukui Plaza case. The indictment alleges Fasi selected Hal Hansen's Oceanside Properties as developer of the Kukui Plaza urban renewal project in return for Hansen's agreement to make payoffs eventually totaling $500,000. Fasi says he is innocent. The charges are later dropped.

2003: Hawaiian Airlines files for bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a decade. (It emerged from bankruptcy last year.)
