UH close to filling associate AD spot

Carl R. Clapp, who has been director of athletics and recreational sports at Saint Mary's College of Moraga, Calif., is expected to become associate athletic director at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, pending Board of Regents approval.

Clapp interviewed at UH this month for the position vacated by Tom Sadler last summer, and approval could come as soon as this week.

Clapp declined comment saying in an e-mail, "any comment about the search should come from the UH administration." A Saint Mary's spokesman said it was "premature" to discuss his departure until after UH's announcement and a Hawai'i spokeswoman declined comment "for now."

Clapp has spent nearly six years in charge of athletics at Saint Mary's, a West Coast Conference school. Prior to that Clapp was athletic director at Redlands University (1995-2000) and Avila College (1992-95) in Missouri. He also served as commissioner of the Midlands Collegiate Conference.

Clapp has been an assistant football coach at Emporia State, Arizona, Arizona State and Wichita State.

Sadler's position, which was as right-hand man to athletic director Herman Frazier, had a pay ceiling of $110,000.
