Firefighters rescue swimmer at China Wall

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters rescued a man who jumped off China Wall in Portlock early this morning during heavy downpour and rough seas.

Friends of the local 23-year-old man called 911 at 1:15 a.m. after losing sight of him as he tried to swim back to shore, said Capt. Kenison Tejada, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.

The man was able to swim to a small cove and took shelter there, Tejada said.

A rescue boat and Air One helicopter were dispatched but sent back after a crew from the Hawaii Kai station was able to reach the man, he said.

"The tide had dropped low enough so that we were able to make our way right along the water's edge, over rocks, to get there," Tejada said.

The man was then able to walk to shore. Police said he refused treatment.
