1955: A series of five dirt and rock barriers pushed up in a 32-hour period by a fleet of six bulldozers redirects the path of a lava flow that threatened some 80 acres of coffee land on the south Puna coast.
1968: Both houses of the Legislature vote to retain at least 20 acres of Magic Island for public park use under state control. That brought to an end a long dispute over development of the manmade parcel of reclaimed land off Ala Moana Park. The state had previously planned to auction the parcel to private interests as a commercial park.
