Trailer on Lana'i blown off its footings

Advertiser Staff

LANA'I CITY — A trailer used as a construction site office at Kaumalapau Harbor was blown off its footings sometime overnight, possibly by a tornado.

A rare tornado warning was issued for Lana'i effective from about 9:30 to 10 p.m. as powerful thunderstorms approached. There apparently were no witnesses at the harbor. Sgt. Max Kincaid of the Maui Police Department's Lana'i District said the trailer was blown about 10 feet down a berm and onto a roadway, and an awning used to shade workers during breaks was lifted onto power lines, he said.

No other storm damage was reported on the island, Kincaid.

The trailer belonged to Traylor Brothers, which has a $16 million contract for breakwater repairs at Kaumalapau, Lana'i's only commercial port. Company officials on Lana'i could not be contacted this morning, and officials at the California office did not have details.
