Federal flood assessment ordered for Windward O'ahu

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be conducting a flood assessment in Ka'a'awa and Punalu'u as a result of continual flooding in Windward O'ahu, a statement by U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye said.

The statement said an initial $300,000 has been secured for the assessment, which will be funded entirely by the federal government.

"This Ka'a'awa and Punalu'u study will help to identify actions and provide the community and government agencies with a sense of the steps necessary to safeguard against future flooding. Additional funds will be provided as needed," Inouye said in the statement.

The Corps also is working on flood control planning in Kahuku, including problems in Kahuku High School and the Wailele Stream in La'ie.
