Ala Moana Park to close nightly for the next month

Advertiser Staff

Ala Moana Regional Park will be closed nightly for a month, beginning Monday, as a prelude to a major maintenance and cleanup effort, city officials said today.

The park will be closed to people and vehicles between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. Those hours will be changed to 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. March 31 to April 2 for the Honolulu Centennial Family Festival on Magic Island.

Beginning April 25, the entire park will be closed for three days for maintenance and cleanup work including: repair of picnic tables, park benches, potholes and irrigation systems; maintenance work on lifeguard towers; and a thorough cleaning of comfort stations, a city news release said.

In addition, workers will paint Ala Wai portals, canal bridges, retaining walls, the 'ewa-side and Waikiki-side comfort stations, repaint curbs, and re-stripe parking lots and a beach road.

"Our goal is to improve Ala Moana Park safety, maintenance and cleanliness," said Lester Chang, director of the city's Department of Parks and Recreation, in a news release. "We want to bring the sparkle back to one of our crown jewel parks."
