Sewer main ruptures; flows go into Ala Wai

The left lane of Ala Wai Boulevard has been closed to traffic to allow for repairs and capture of the spilled wastewater, the release said.
Kaiolu Street is closed to through traffic.
Motorists should expect lane restrictions elsewhere in Waikiki for pumps to divert sewage from the broken line. Portions of the municipal parking lot at Kaiolu Street and Kuhio Avenue may be closed.
The break was discovered about 7 a.m. on Kaiolu Street. The rupture appears to be in a 42-inch force main. Environmental Services officials believe last night's heavy rains may have contributed to the break, the release said.
Some of the untreated wastewater from the break spilled into a storm drain that leads to the Ala Wai Canal.
Warning signs are being posted along the canal and various points downstream. Officials said the public is advised to heed the signs and avoid contact with the affected waters. Water samples are being taken. The state Health Department has been notified.
