Talk story on family issues

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Do your children throw tantrums? Do you have questions about your child's homework? Is sibling rivalry causing distress? Find solutions to these dilemmas and more at the Family Education Center of Hawaii's free Talk Story parenting sessions, 5:30 p.m. Fridays at Sans Souci Beach.

From tonight through April, UH professors James Deutch and Mary Martini will facilitate discussions on parenting issues and family management. Bring the whole family (and your favorite dish) to the potluck gatherings. To register: 383-2853, lisaj@hawaii.edu.

If you follow the cases of fictional Botswanan sleuth Precious Mtotse in "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" and its sequels, you won't want to miss author Alexander McCall Smith at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa at 7 tonight.

Expect self-deprecating Brit wit (his amateur musical group in Edinburgh is called the Really Terrible Orchestra), a reading from his new series, "The Sunday Philosophy Club," and tales on all kinds of topics he was born in what is now Zimbabwe, worked in Botswana and is a professor of medical law. It's in the Campus Center Ballroom. Free.
