The price of real estate was a big topic even back in 1901.

1907: The Territorial Legislature passes an act establishing the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. It eventually becomes the College of Hawai'i and then the University of Hawai'i.

1915: The U.S. submarine Skate, with 21 crewmen aboard, explodes and sinks a mile off Honolulu Harbor. The entire crew is killed. It is the first major Navy submarine disaster.

1924: Lili'uokalani's jewels are sold for $12,192 in an auction at a rooftop pavilion of the Young hotel. The diamond tiara that she wore on state occasions during her reign as queen went for $2,100.

1937: The world premiere of "Waikiki Wedding," starring Bing Crosby, is held at the Waikiki Theatre. Harry Owens' "Sweet Leilani" was sung in the movie, as was "Blue Hawaii."

1955: Gov. Samuel W. King declares eruption-torn Puna a disaster area and asks the federal government for $1 million in disaster relief. Meanwhile, a new fissure opens on Kilauea's flank.

1960: Plans for the Ka'anapali beach resort development on Maui are announced by Pioneer Mill Co.

1961: Rose Marie Alvaro is chosen as the Hawaii Visitors Bureau's new "poster girl" in an aggressive new effort to sell the Islands in the jet age. She was 18 and was to become one of the most widely recognized faces in Hawai'i. She was used in HVB posters into the mid-1970s.

1961: Elvis Presley arrives for his benefit concert at Bloch Arena to raise money for the construction of the Arizona Memorial.

1966: William Shaw Richardson becomes the first part-Hawaiian chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

1970: The state administration drops all plans for a Magic Island resort complex. Officials at the Department of Land and Natural Resources said they favor repeal of a resolution authorizing development of high-rise hotels or apartment buildings at Kewalo Basin.

1984: Mauna Loa erupts, launching four lava flows and featuring an 800-yard-long curtain of fire much of the day.

1986: Pan American World Airways, which pioneered scheduled trans-Pacific air service, announces it is pulling out of the Islands.
