Kalaheo remained unbeaten in O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball last night by holding off McKinley, 47-38, to set up Tuesday's big showdown with Roosevelt.

The visiting Mustangs improved to 3-0 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division. McKinley fell to 0-4; the Tigers' three previous losses were by a total of 13 points — including a 43-40 loss to Kahuku on Tuesday after squandering a 12-point third-period lead.

Last night's game was tied at 36-36 with just over four minutes remaining when Kalaheo guard Shanadee Canon made a steal at halfcourt and converted it into a layup.

The Mustangs' Kaliko Kepa followed with a three-point play a half-minute later, and after Chelsie Sato's free throws cut it to 41-38 with 3:12 remaining, Kalaheo scored the game's final six points to seal the victory.

"We knew that they could shoot from the perimeter and that this would be a tough game," said Mustangs wing Kendra Fischer, who finished with a team-high 12 points. "We just had to execute."

McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said his team's failure to do that has cost the Tigers in every loss.

"The other three games, it was the same thing — we just ran out of steam down the stretch," Victorino said. "We're right there, and we showed we can play with anybody. But we just broke down at the end."

Kalaheo built a 14-7 lead early in the second period, only to see McKinley cut it to 16-13 by halftime. The Mustangs stretched it to 30-25 late in the third quarter, but Sato swished a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut it to 30-28.

Sato, a junior guard, was held to two points in the first half but finished with a game-high 14.

"I wasn't too concerned about Chelsie's scoring; her main job tonight was to slow down Shanadee," Victorino said. "(Canon) scored 25 points in her last game. They are two of the premier guards in the state."

Canon, also a junior, finished with 11 points and six rebounds last night.

But her key play was the late steal, in which she stepped in front of a pass intended for Sato. She also sank 7 of 10 free throws — including four straight in the final 25 seconds — after going 11 of 18 from the line in last Saturday's 76-74 double-overtime win over Kahuku.

Kalaheo also held the Tigers to four 3-point baskets, and none in the final period.

"They're always dangerous because of their shooters," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said. "We struggled at times, but any time you can come out with a win, it's a good thing."

Kalaheo travels to Roosevelt (4-0) on Tuesday, with tipoff set for about 6:30 p.m.
