Kalani tops Moanalua, 4-1

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kalani has been without a home baseball field for the past week but got a big O'ahu Interscholastic Association victory yesterday over Moanalua, 4-1.

The visiting Falcons improved to 2-0 in the OIA's Eastern Division; Moanalua fell to 1-1.

Micah Takahashi had a no-hitter going until two outs in the fifth inning and Ridge Carpenter went 3 for 4 with a run-scoring triple to lead Kalani, whose home field at Kahala Community Park is six inches under water in some portions because of heavy rain this past week, according to coach Shannon Hirai.

The Falcons have been limited to short workouts on the school's football field and tennis courts, plus extended time in the batting cage and weight room.

"We've been doing mostly field work — cleanup," said Takahashi, a junior right-hander who allowed three hits and one run in six-plus innings before giving way to Josh Markwith in the seventh. "We've done some hitting and lifting, but that's about it."

The past week's dreary weather and practice routines did not appear to bother the Falcons yesterday, as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Markwith led off with a double to left field and came home on Carpenter's one-out double to the left-center alley, and Carpenter later scored on Shamus Kumashiro's infield single.

In the bottom of the first, leadoff batter Peter Arakawa walked on four pitches and advanced to second on Jay Yoshikawa's sacrifice bunt, but Takahashi retired the next two batters on a strikeout and fly to left and did not allow another runner into scoring position until Kekoa Lee's triple to center in the fifth.

"I was just trying to get outs batter by batter," said Takahashi, who said he was unaware of his no-hit bid. "I struggled in the beginning, but then I just tried to throw strikes and let my defense play. It was all about teamwork."

His teammates gave him a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning after Jordan Sumida reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third after two walks and scored on a wild pitch.

After allowing Lee's triple, Takahashi got the third out on an infield fly, then set down Na Menehune in order in the sixth.

Kalani went up 4-0 in the seventh after Sumida reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on Carpenter's single to left and scored on Jason Lee's sacrifice fly to right.

Moanalua finally got a run in the seventh after Marcus Miyashiro led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Mike Amorozo's single to right.

But Markwith, the starting catcher, relieved Takahashi at that point and immediately got a double play and strikeout to earn the save.

"Give Kalani credit," Na Menehune coach Scott Yamada said. "They pitched well, played defense and got the hits when they needed to."

Moanalua's field was playable yesterday only after Yamada began work on it at 6 a.m. for the 1 p.m. game.
