Rainbow Wahine complete softball sweep of LaTech, 8-1

Kaulana Gould went 3 for 4 with an RBI double, and Justine Smethurst pitched a four-hitter to lead the University of Hawai'i softball team to an 8-1 victory over Louisiana Tech yesterday at Ruston, La., and a sweep of its first Western Athletic Conference series this season.

Hawai'i is 17-13 overall and 3-0 in the WAC. Louisiana Tech is 7-17 and 0-3.

Smethurst (8-7) earned her second victory of the series. Yesterday, she struck out six and walked one. She retired 13 Lady Techsters in a row before giving up a single to left with two outs in the seventh inning.

UH's Valana Manuma hit a two-run single in a three-run second inning that gave UH a 4-0 lead.

Gould had a RBI double in a two-run fifth.

The Rainbow Wahine play a non-conference doubleheader at Grambling State today.


PADDLING

HAWAI'I FINISHES THIRD

Hawai'i placed third in the overall medal standings of the International Va'a Federation World Sprints canoe races last week at Lake Karapiro, New Zealand.

Hawai'i won 26 medals — six gold, 13 silver and seven bronze — during the five days of competition.

Host New Zealand placed first with 64 medals, including 20 gold. Tahiti was second with 49 total medals, including 23 gold.

John Foti of the Lanikai Canoe Club was the only Hawai'i paddler to win an individual gold medal. He won the 500-meter solo race in the masters men (ages 40 and older) division.

The other Hawai'i gold medals came in the team races:

  • Kailua won the golden masters men 1,000-meter race in a six-person canoe.

  • 'Anuenue won the golden masters men 500-meter race in a six-person canoe.

  • Team Hawai'i won the senior masters women 1,000-meter race in a six-person canoe.

  • A combination crew of Team Hawai'i and Hui Lanakila won the masters women 500-meter race in a 12-person canoe.

  • A combination crew of Kailua and Keauhou won the golden masters men 500-meter race in a 12-person canoe.

    More than 1,800 paddlers from around the world participated in the event, which is held every two years at a different site.


    BASEBALL

    UH-HILO LOSES, 14-4

    Dustin Realini had four of Santa Clara's 18 hits as the Broncos defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 14-4, in a college baseball game at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.

    Santa Clara is 15-11. UH-Hilo is 9-20.

    Realini drove in five runs, driving in runs on two singles, a double and triple.

    Jimmy Crider went 3 for 4 for Hawai'i-Hilo. Matthew Haasenritter had a two-run single.

    HPU WINS TWO ON ROAD

    Hawai'i Pacific got complete-game performances from pitchers Mario Ramirez and Brandon Muser to help the Sea Warriors to a doubleheader sweep over Central Washington at Ellensburg, Wash., yesterday.

    Hawai'i Pacific is 15-13. Central Washington is 10-6.

    In the nine-inning first game, Ramirez (4-1) allowed five runs and 11 hits, striking out five and walking one in a 6-5 victory.

    HPU scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning — including an RBI single by Jherell Miller — to take a 6-3 lead. Central Washington scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

    HPU's Michael Kealoha hit a two-run homer to left-center field in the second inning.

    In the seven-inning second game, Muser (4-1) pitched a two-hitter, striking out three and walking seven in a 3-1 victory.

    Kealoha drove in all three runs with a two-run single in the second, and a run-scoring double in the sixth.


    WATER POLO

    RAINBOW WAHINE ROLL

    Iefke Van Belkum, Kelly Mason, Amy Logan and Lisa van Raalte each scored two goals to lift No. 5 Hawai'i to a 12-8 victory over No. 9 San Jose State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex yesterday.

    UH is 10-6 overall and 5-2 in the MPSF. San Jose State is 8-10 and 3-4.

    The Rainbow Wahine led 8-1 after the first two quarters before the Spartans closed to 9-5 after three quarters.

    UH goalie Jamie Wendell had seven saves.
