POLICE BEAT
Wahiawa man, 21, found dead in car

Advertiser Staff

A 21-year-old Wahiawa man was killed early yesterday in a one-car crash in Kunia.

The man's car was found overturned down an embankment by a Hawaiian Electric Co. crew that was sent to the area after a power failure, police said. The failure occurred at 2:13 a.m. and the HECO crew reached the scene about 4 a.m., police said.

The man was found sitting in the car with his seat belt on and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he died of apparent internal injuries.

Police believe the man was heading south on Kunia Road when he lost control of his 1998 Ford Escort near Kunia Drive. The car hit and severed a utility pole, went down an embankment and landed on its roof.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash. Yesterday's death was O'ahu's 22nd traffic fatality this year, compared with 20 at this time last year.

A couple of hours later, the grandmother was returning from the store and saw the granddaughter driving the car that had been reported stolen, police said.

Police arrived at the grandmother's home and arrested the girl.
