Hawai'i softball gets more perfection

Advertiser Staff

In record-setting fashion, the University of Hawai'i softball team swept Grambling State, 25-0 and 14-0, to complete an unbeaten five-game road trip in Louisiana.

Each game in yesterday's doubleheader was called after five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.

In the first game, Justine Smethurst and Jessica Morton combined to pitch a perfect game. Two weeks ago, Smethurst threw a perfect game against Longwood.

"I felt really good," said Smethurst, who struck out four in three innings. She mixed riseballs and screwballs.

The Rainbow Wahine set team records for most runs, hits (25) and RBIs (24).

Third baseman Clare Warwick led the way, going 3 for 3 with four runs, five RBIs, a double and a homer.

In the second game, first baseman Tyleen Tausaga drove in four runs with a double and a payback three-run homer. Answering taunts from hecklers, Tausaga punctuated her homer with a slow trot.

"I wanted to enjoy it a little bit," she said. "I was trying to get them back because they were trying to mess with my game. They were saying stuff. I was getting mad, but I calmed myself down."

Also yesterday, UH sophomore Kaulana Gould was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

The centerfielder/catcher from 'Ewa Beach hit .533 with two doubles, a home run, five RBIs and four runs in a loss to Northwestern and a sweep of Louisiana Tech.

HPU SWEEPS ON ROAD

Jennifer Baron hit two of Hawai'i Pacific's five home runs as the Sea Warriors swept host Cal State San Bernardino, 7-1 and 5-3, in a softball doubleheader yesterday.

In the first game, Barron, Krystal Plunkett, Jessica Adolph and Lia Pedrina each hit home runs in support of winning pitcher Dayna Berry, who tossed a five-hitter.

In the second game, Baron went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs, and Courtney Kessell scattered six hits to earn the victory for the Sea Warriors (17-5). The Coyotes dropped to 12-20.

HILO-S.F. STATE HALTED

The first game of a scheduled doubleheader yesterday between Hawai'i-Hilo and host San Francisco State was halted in the top of the sixth inning.

San Francisco State led 5-0 when play was halted because of weather. The game is scheduled to restart at 1 p.m. today.

Also, the doubleheader between Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) and Brigham Young-Hawai'i at BYUH field in La'ie was canceled because of rain.
