Cleanup beneath overpass begins with sweep

Advertiser Staff

State Department of Transportation personnel, along with police and workers from other state agencies, began their sweep and cleanup beneath the 12 overpasses of the Keehi Interchange on the Nimitz Highway this morning, DOT spokesman Scott Ishikawa said.

The area had become a concern because of public safety issues including fires and criminal activity, Ishikawa said. Illegal trash dumps and camps of homeless people were also a concern.

Ishikawa said about 100 personnel were onhand and that the cleanup was expected to take a week. He said that the homeless living under the highway overpasses had been notified about the sweep and only one or two people were there when authorities arrived to begin the cleanup this morning.
