1947: There are now three major strikes in Honolulu, affecting 1,119 workers at Hawaiian Tuna Packers, Oahu Railway & Land Co., and Hawaiian Pineapple Co.
1958: Gov. William Quinn declares a "state of emergency" on the Territory's roadways and orders the Hawai'i National Guard to stand ready to help police crack down on traffic violators. Four people had died in traffic accidents in a 48-hour period.
1965: Despite community opposition, the state auctions 33 Diamond Head view lots including four controversial ones on the upper slopes of the landmark crater, for a total of $1,040,550. Twenty more lots were auctioned the next day to complete the 53-lot subdivision.
1994: Alfred Preis, the architect who designed the Arizona Memorial and numerous structures in the Islands, dies at the age of 83. Preis, who fled Nazi-occupied Austria, and his Russian-born wife were interned at Sand Island after the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. They were held for
3 1/2 months.
2001: Island institution Shirokiya is saved from the threat of closure when a group of former and present managers buy the retailer from its owner in Japan.
