Stanford swamps Hawai'i in water polo

Katie Hansen scored six goals as No. 2 Stanford defeated No. 5 Hawai'i, 12-6, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match at UH's Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Lauren Silver added three goals and Meredith McColl made six saves for the Cardinal (14-3, 7-1 MPSF), who scored six goals in the second quarter to build an 8-3 lead.

Iefke Van Belkum, who was named the MPSF Player of the Week earlier in the day, scored three goals for the Rainbow Wahine (10-7, 5-3).

Van Belkum and Amy Logan scored goals to open the fourth quarter as UH closed to 10-6, but Stanford held on as Hansen added her fifth and sixth goals.

Van Belkum, a sophomore from The Netherlands, had six goals against Santa Barbara on March 25 and two against San Jose State on March 26 in earning her second MPSF weekly honor.


JUDO

TAKATA GRABS GOLD

Iolani alum Taylor Takata won his second title at the New York Open Judo Championship on March 18.

Takata, competing in the 66-kilogram division (145 pounds), threw Marek Krecielewski for waza-ari (half point) to win both gold and the $1,000 award. Takata won the title in the 60 kg (132) class in 2003.

The New York Open is an annual elite tournament that is classified as a USA Judo Senior C Level points event. It draws most of the top Americans as well as an international field that includes Olympic and World Championship medalists, according to a release.


BASEBALL

HPU SWEEPS SERIES

Spencer Omalza pitched a three-hitter over 8 2/3 innings as Hawai'i Pacific beat Central Washington, 2-1, yesterday to complete a sweep of a non-conference series at Ellensburg, Wash.

Omalza was replaced with the bases loaded in the ninth by Matt Burson, who got Justin Marshall to ground out to end the game.

Earlier, Michael Kealoha singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as HPU beat Central Washington, 4-3, in a game suspended Monday because of darkness.

The Sea Warriors are now 19-13.


GOLF

UH FINISHES NINTH

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a final-round 297 to finish ninth with a 596 total in the 16-team 60th Western Intercollegiate tournament yesterday at San Jose, Calif.

Duke won with 293—577.

UH's Pierre-Henri Soero finished in a tie for eighth with 73—143. Stanford's Rob Grube won with 70—138.


SOFTBALL

RAIN, UH-HILO FALL

San Francisco State was awarded a 5-0 victory over visiting Hawai'i-Hilo yesterday when persistent rain did not permit continuation of a game halted in the top of the sixth inning Monday.

The Vulcans fell to 10-10.

Elsewhere, the doubleheader between Brigham Young-Hawai'i and George Fox (Ore.) at BYUH Field was postponed.


TENNIS

BYUH WINS, LOSES

The second-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's team beat No. 3 West Florida, 7-2, while the No. 12 BYUH men's team fell to No. 4 West Florida, 6-3, yesterday at Pensacola, Fla.

The Seasider women are 17-0; the Seasider men 12-1.
