Heavy rains headed toward O'ahu

Advertiser Staff

A new mass of rain and thunderstorms is forming over O'ahu and the National Weather Service said it expects the island will see heavy showers this afternoon.

Ni'ihau, Kaua'i and O'ahu are under a flash flood watch and a severe thunderstorm watch until 2 p.m., said Robert Ballard, forecaster. The thunderstorms will be localized but carry the threat of damaging winds, Ballard said.

The other islands are quiet for now but by this afternoon thunderstorms could develop over the Big Island and Maui, he said.

"We are still under the gun and it is not over yet," he said. "We've got another round this afternoon and this evening to get through before we can hopefully look for some improvement as we head into and through the weekend."

The National Weather Service is warning people to stay out of flooded areas and not to drive through flowing water.
