Wie shoots 71, remains in second

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — Michelle Wie remains in second halfway through the LPGA's first major of the year after shooting a 1-under-par 71 today in the second round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Wie, a 16-year-old Punahou junior, is 7-under for the tournament and trails leader Lorena Ochoa by four shots going into tomorrow's third round.

The final threesome will tee off just before 9 a.m., Hawai'i time, tomorrow.

Ochoa, who opened with a tournament-record 62, also shot 71 yesterday as the wind picked up and conditions deteriorated, and grew dramatically colder, at Mission Hills Country Club.

Hall of Famer Karrie Webb made the biggest move, shooting a 68 to climb into a share of third with Seon-Hwa Lee and Paula Creamer at 138 — five behind Ochoa and one back of Wie. Lee lost the Fields Open in Hawai'i in a playoff with Meena Lee five weeks ago. Wie finished a stroke back in her only previous LPGA appearance of 2006.

Wie had three birdies and two three-putt bogeys yesterday. For the second straight day she was rarely in trouble, hitting 15 greens in regulation and missing just three fairways. But, she struggled to get the ball close to the hole and needed 35 putts.

Defending champion Annika Sorenstam shot 72 and is 1-under at the halfway mark. Only 13 players are under par going into the weekend.

Morgan Pressel was 5-over on the back nine, including a triple bogey on the par-3 14th, and shot 76.
