On March 31, 1921, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser changed its name to The Honolulu Advertiser.

1917: Gov. Pinkham authorizes the harbor master to place civil guards on German refugee ships in Honolulu Harbor.

1931: Kamehameha Schools alumni adopt a resolution opposing a proposal by Bishop Estate trustees to admit non-Hawaiian students.

1946: A B-29 Superfortress completes the first nonstop flight from Hawai'i to the Philippines in 21 hours and 46 minutes.

1947: One prisoner is killed and a guard is beaten when 30 Army prisoners attempt to break out of the stockade at Schofield Barracks.

1955: The first traffic flowed over the newest section of the Mauka Arterial. The new half-mile section extended from Ke'eaumoku and Lunalilo to Alexander Street, where it connected with the first completed mile of the six-lane freeway.

1968: President Lyndon Johnson tells the nation he will not seek re-election or accept renomination and says the decision is "irrevocable." He made the announcement at the same time that he appealed to Ho Chi Minh to seek peace in Vietnam. Johnson also ordered a partial halt to U.S. bombing in Vietnam.

1993: The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rules that Kamehameha Schools cannot discriminate against non-Protestant teachers despite a discriminatory clause in Bernice Pauahi Bishop's will.

1993: The 110-year-old Hamakua Sugar Co. ceases operations. The company had been in bankruptcy since August.
