Iolani fills volleyball, soccer positions

Iolani School yesterday announced the hiring of Jenic Tumaneng as head girls volleyball coach and Chris Nied as head girls soccer coach.

Tumaneng was the head girls volleyball coach at Farrington High since 1991, leading the Governors to O'ahu Interscholastic Association titles in 1995, '98 and '99.

The 1985 Farrington High and 1998 Hawai'i Pacific graduate is currently the head coach of Farrington's girls basketball team.

Nied, a 1979 Iolani graduate and Lewis & Clark College alum, was the head boys soccer coach at Kamehameha from 1992-98. He also coached the men's team at Lewis & Clark, and held several coaching positions in the Hawai'i Youth Soccer Association from 1985 to 2004.


BASEBALL

HPU LOSES

Maki Smith batted 4 for 6 with five RBIs and host Saint Martin's unleashed a 16-hit attack to trounce Hawai'i Pacific, 12-3, yesterday in a non-conference game at Lacey, Wash.

Danny Lee, Gavin Concepcion and Grandon Costa each had two hits for HPU (19-14), which saw its five-game winning streak end. Lee, Concepcion and Chase Nakamura contributed RBIs.

OIA POSTPONED

Yesterday's nine O'ahu Interscholastic Association games were postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Monday, starting at 4 p.m.

The following games were affected: Mililani at Pearl City; Wai'anae at 'Aiea; Kapolei vs. Leilehua at Fred Wright Field; Radford at Nanakuli; Waipahu at Waialua; Moanalua at Kailua; Kalaheo vs. Kalani at Kahala Field; Kaimuki at McKinley; Kahuku vs. Farrington at Joey DeSa Field.


SOFTBALL

CU DROPS TWO

Third-ranked Humboldt State swept Chaminade, 11-0 and 10-2, yesterday in a non-conference NCAA Division II softball doubleheader at Turlock, Calif.

Lizzy Prescott (11-1) pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts in the opener, and Tracy Motzny (16-2) tossed a two-hitter with four strikeouts in the second game as the Lumberjacks (30-3) stretched their win streak to 24 games.

Jara Michelle, Heidi Garcia and Michelle Oxtoby had hits for the Silverswords (7-18).

BYUH FALLS

Lindsey Aucutt singled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh as Seattle University beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 4-3, in a non-conference game at Turlock, Calif.

Tiani Mattos and Sheri Howell each had two hits for the Seasiders (7-16), who led 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh.


SPEED CLINIC

ALL-AMERICA GUESTS

Former All-Americans Chad Owens and Victoria Prince will be guest instructors at this weekend's Hawai'i Speed and Quickness clinics at the University of Hawai'i.

Owens, a standout receiver/returner for the Warriors, is a member of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars. Prince, a top middle blocker for the Rainbow Wahine, is attempting to compete on the professional beach volleyball circuit.

Sessions are $10 each, and will be conducted tomorrow and Sunday. Sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. for ages 7-12 and 10:30 a.m. to noon for those 13 and older.
