Big Island soldier killed in Iraq

A soldier from Hilo, Hawaii was killed in Baghdad, Iraq Saturday when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations, the Department of Defense said today.

Army Sgt. Steve M. Sakoda, 29, was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

He is the second soldier from Hawai'i to be killed in Iraq in less than a week.

On April 24, Staff Sgt. Metodio A. Bandonill, 29, of Kalihi was killed during combat operations by an improvised explosive device.

Bandonill was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.
