  • MILES ICHINOSE, owner of five McDonald's restaurants on O'ahu, is the first Hawai'i franchise owner to earn McDonald's Golden Arch Award, a recognition given once every two years to 30 of some 4,500 franchise owners worldwide. The award recognizes consistent excellence in customer service, community involvement, training and overall business performance. Ichinose began as a McDonald's assistant manager in 1971, and bought his first McDonald's in Waipahu in 1983. McDonald's Restaurants of Hawai'i has 85 outlets in Hawai'i, Guam and Saipan, with more than 3,500 employees.

  • The AT&T Award of Excellence has been given to KATHLEEN TORRES, a registered nurse at The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, for excellence in the field of medical rehabilitation. The award will enable Torres — whose "medical family" includes her emergency room registered nurse mother, and emergency medical technician father — to expand her education: she is researching conferences pertaining to spinal cord injuries, and other seminars on rehabilitation nursing.

  • Hawai'i's Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay is included in Child magazine's May 2006 issue as one of the 10 Best Family-Friendly Resorts, the culmination of a six-month data-driven survey of more than 340 U.S. resorts. Other child-friendly resorts on the list ranged from locations in Martha's Vineyard; Williamsburg, Va.; Longboat Key, Fla.; and Ojai, Calif.

  • Maui Brewing Co. took home two medals in the recent 2006 Brewers Association World Beer Cup, held every two years. The local brewery and brewpub bested 2,221 entries from 540 breweries in 56 countries and 85 beer-style categories worldwide to take home two medals: a gold medal for CoCoNut Porter, and a bronze medal for the Red Cock Doppel Bock. They were the only awards to go to Hawai'i breweries, and come on the heels of two silver medals at the Great American Beer Festival in October 2005. All of the Maui Brewing Co. beers are brewed on location in Kahana — and the company is in negotiations to open a second location in Upcountry Maui, a location to feature a simple menu, traditional beer garden setting and visible production area.

The Better Business Bureau of Hawai'i has honored five companies in several categories with its Torch Awards for demonstrating high ethical business standards, integrity in business, truth in advertising, and commitment to community service. They are: Enterprise Rent-A-Car of Hawai'i, (Large business, 100 or more employees); Environmental Waste Management Systems Inc., (Small business, 99 or fewer employees); Catholic Charities Hawai'i, (Large nonprofit, 100 or more employees); Hawai'i Theatre Center, (Small nonprofit, 99 or fewer employees); Valley Isle Gymnastics, Maui (business individual).

  • AD 2 HONOLULU has been named "Club of the Year" by the American Advertising Federation for the third consecutive year. The club, composed of young advertising affiliates — all 32 years of age or younger, and including students — competed against Ad 2 groups nationwide.
