Preservation fete at Capitol today

The third annual Historic Preservation Awareness Celebration will get under way today at the state Capitol. The three-day event begins at 11:30 a.m. with Gov. Linda Lingle signing a proclamation and legislation tied to Historic Preservation Awareness Day.

Tomorrow's activities will feature a self-guided 10-site heritage walk of the "Capitol Cultural District." Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. at the Capitol, Queen Lili'uokalani entrance. The walk will take place from 9 until 11:30 a.m. The celebration wraps up Wednesday with a cultural awareness fair that features exhibits on the third-floor corridors and conference rooms 325 and 329. A potluck lunch will follow in Room 328.

Rep. Corrine Ching, (R-Liliha, Pu'unui) who co-chairs the Heritage Caucus, is the celebration's organizer.




HAWAI'I KAI

WALK WILL BENEFIT A PARK FOR DOGS

The second annual Hawai'i Kai Dog Walk, a 2.3 mile stroll to raise money for a dog park, will be held June 4.

The organizers, Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i, formed to build the proposed dog park. The dog walk will start and end at the Hawai'i Kai park-and-ride facility on Keahole Street. Check-in is at 7 a.m., and paws hit the pavement at 8.

The deadline to preregister, which costs $15, is May 12. Every preregistered entrant receives a T-shirt. Walk-in registration is $20. The Hawaiian Humane Society will man an information booth providing dog license application forms and microchip information.

The dog park will be built on public land next to the park-and-ride facility. For more information, write to hui-ilio @hawaii.rr.com.



LIONS CLUBS GIVE $2,000 TO LIBRARY

The Nagoya Joto Lions Club and Hawai'i Kai Lions Club have made their annual gift of $1,000 each to the Hawai'i Kai Public Library.

This is the 19th year the clubs have made donations to the library. The donations are used to purchase books and other materials. The two Lions groups also donated a glass case to display a miniature Japanese bow and arrow and sword set donated last year by the Nagoya Joto Lions and two Obara handicraft paper art (collages made with Japanese paper) by artist Issei Yamauchi, from the Nagoya Joto Lions.

3,500 LIGHT BULBS WILL AID GOODWILL

Energy Industries, a Mapunapuna-based energy services company, donated 3,500 light bulbs to Goodwill Industries of Hawai'i for sale to support the not-for-profit agency's job placement and career development social service programs.

More than 90 cents of each dollar earned through the sale of donated goods is channeled by Goodwill into supporting programs, the agency said.

Goodwill is planning to build an Ohana Career and Employment Center in Kapolei, according to Laura Kay Rand, the agency's vice president of corporate services. Details on the new facility are being worked out, but it will provide communities in Leeward O'ahu with more accessible employment, training and learning opportunities, Rand said.

TEEN INJURED IN MOPED CRASH

A teenage boy was critically injured last night in a collision at about 9 p.m. between a moped and sports utility vehicle in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven convenience store at 41-1540 Kalaniana'ole Highway, near Po'alima Street in Waimanalo.

The boy, who was the moped driver, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.

No other injuries were reported, according to city Emergency Medical Services spokes-man Bryan Cheplic.

COUNTY FAIR SEEKS ESSAYISTS, ARTISTS

WAILUKU — Maui County residents of all ages can enter the "What the Maui County Fair Means to Me" essay and art contest.

Winners will receive four free passes to the fair, Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, and free rides.

Essays must be 500 words or less. Drawings and paintings should be no larger than 8 1/2 by 11 inches. Submit entries with name, address and phone number by May 30 to: Maui County Fair, P.O. Box 95, Kahului, HI 96733.

GOLF EVENT RAISES $4,208 FOR SCHOOL

LAHAINA — Lahainaluna High School's Athletics Department recently received $4,208 raised during December's third annual Bash 'n' Scramble Employee Tournament for the Ka'anapali Resort.

The friendly competition at the Ka'anapali South Course drew 152 entrants who work at the resort's hotels, restaurants and related businesses. Lahainaluna cheerleaders, coaches, players and other students assisted with the fundraiser.

Scott Ashworth, PGA head golf professional for Ka'anapali Golf Courses, presented the check to school athletic director Joe Balangitao, who said the money would pay for new equipment and travel expenses.

HAMURA'S WINS NATIONAL HONOR

LIHUE — Hamura's Saimin Stand is being honored by the James Beard Foundation in its America's Classics segment of its awards show on May 8 in New York City.

Hamura's is one of eight eateries nationwide to be recognized for excellence and "preserving America's culinary heritage and diversity."

Employees at the Kaua'i saimin stand start preparing the noodles at 3 a.m. in the family's factory. They use secret ingredients to make a broth that's been in use since 1951, when Aiko Hamura, the family matriarch, started the business.
