Ching is first from Hawaii to make World Cup

Brian Ching, a 1996 Kamehameha Schools graduate, became the first player from Hawai'i to be named to the United States' World Cup soccer team today.

Ching, 28, a forward, plays professional for the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer.

Last month, Ching scored four goals in a 5-2 victory over Colorado in an MLS game.

He played college soccer at Gonzaga.

The World Cup will be held from June 9 to July 9 in Germany.

The United States opens against the Czech Republic June 12, meets Italy on June 17, and closes the first round against Ghana June 22.

Also on the 23-player team are Landon Donovan and Eddie Johnson.
