Thos. G. Thrum advertised the new books that had just arrived on the Mariposa in the May 2, 1899 Pacific Commercial Advertiser.

1870: John Papa Ii dies. He was an associate justice of the Superior Court and a Hawai'i Supreme Court justice. He was also appointed to the House of Nobles and the privy council under Kamehameha III.

1893: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that the band at Kalaupapa needs new outfits to replace their well-worn white suits.

1903: The Honolulu Symphony performs its first concert. It was, The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported, "one of the most perfectly balanced musical events Honolulu has been privileged to enjoy in recent years."

1920: Electrical workers at the Mutual Telephone Co. go on strike.

1945: Russian forces capture Berlin and Germany surrenders to the Allies.
